Police lay arson charges, Ripley

Ipswich detectives have charged a man following an alleged arson at Ripley yesterday (February 28).

It will be alleged around 6:15 am, a house on Maguire Street was deliberately set on fire.

No people were inside the property at the time and no one was physically injured. Significant damage occurred to the house.

The man fled the scene by stealing a utility parked nearby.

It will be further alleged the man drove to a service station on Shepherds Road, Greenbank where he threatened a 32-year-old man with a knife, demanding his motorcycle.

The man was restrained at the scene by members of the public until police arrived a short time later.

The 33-year-old Ripley man has been charged with one count each of arson and attempted robbery and two counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and wilful damage.

He was also charged with one count each of possession of a dangerous drug (methylamphetamine), possession of tainted property (cash), breach of domestic violence order and disqualified driving.

He has been denied police bail and is due before Beenleigh Magistrates Court today (March 1).

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed either incident or who has relevant dashcam footage around the time either at Maguire Street in Ripley or Shepherds Road at Greenbank to come forward.
