Police lay assault charges at Bundaberg

Bundaberg detectives have charged a man with eight offences after he threatened a number of people in the early hours of Saturday morning in Walkervale.

It will be alleged around 12.45am a 32-year-old man was driving his car on Walker Street when a man ran at the car. The driver stopped, however when he saw the man had a knife he accelerated away and phoned police.

About 12.55am a 15-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were walking on Maryborough Street when they were approached by a man holding a knife. They had a very brief conversation but kept walking before running from the man.

The man chased the pair along Walker Street and the girl attempted to hide from the man in some bushes. The man found her and holding her by the neck, threatened her with the knife before walking east along Walker Street with the girl. The 15-year-old boy returned and approached the man who released the girl. The girl fled again and the man chased the boy who ran from the man before they both teenagers sought assistance from a passing ambulance.

Police attended and commenced patrols for the man.

Around 3.15am a 42-year-old woman was at the back of her open van in Walker Street when approached by a man who threatened her with a knife. She ran to the driver's door and got into the vehicle and the man got into the passenger seat. The woman fled from the van and phoned police.

Police located the man on Walker Street.

A 29-year-old Cleveland man has been charged with three counts of going armed so as to cause fear, two counts of threatening violence, and one count each of assault, kidnapping and unlawful entry of a vehicle.

He will appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court tomorrow.
