Police lay charges after inquiries into deliberately lit car fire at Lake Illawarra

Police have charged a man following an investigation into a deliberately lit car fire in Lake Illawarra earlier this year.

About 12.20am on Thursday 10 June 2021, police were notified after a Toyota Estema parked in Warwick Street, Berkeley, was destroyed by fire after allegedly being set alight.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District and South Eastern Region Enforcement Squad established Strike Force Wollara to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Following extensive inquiries, officers attended a home on Wollunyuh Crescent, Horsley, about 7.30am today (Wednesday 25 August 2021).

A 20-year-old man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with damage property by fire/explosive – greater than $15,000, threaten to destroy or damage another person's property, contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO, and stalk/intimidate intend fear/physical harm.

The Horsley man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 25 August 2021).

Investigations are continuing.
