Police lay charges after investigation into deliberately lit bushfires - Warrah Creek

Police have charged a volunteer fire fighter following investigations into a number of allegedly deliberately lit fires in the State's north-west.

Between Saturday 4 March 2023 and Sunday 19 March 2023, volunteers from the NSW Rural Fire Service responded to seven separate reports of fires in the vicinity of Swinging Ridges Road and Warrah Creek Road at Warrah Creek, approximately 90km south of Tamworth.

The fires destroyed up to 1.3 hectares of grassland beside the road and on private property in the area.

The fires were reported to police and officers from Oxley Police District commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries by Quirindi Police, with the assistance from the NSW Rural Fire Service, a 19-year-old man was arrested at Warrah Creek about 12.00am today (Monday 20 March 2023).

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with seven counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.

He was refused bail to appear before Tamworth Local court today.
