Police lay charges over drink driving in Knuckey Lagoon

Northern Territory Police charged a man for a number of driving offences after a crash on Vanderlin Drive yesterday afternoon.

At around 1:30pm, a 52-year-old driver rear ended another vehicle at the intersection of Agostini Road and Vanderlin Drive.

The man was found to have been disqualified from driving a motor vehicle, and after a preliminary breath test was conducted he returned a roadside reading of 0.168%. A drug test also returned a positive result.

He was arrested and later charged by police from Darwin Traffic Operations with:

  • 1 x Drive without due care
  • 1 x Drive a motor vehicle while disqualified
  • 1 x Drive high range breath alcohol content
  • 1 x Drive with prohibited drug in body

He was bailed to appear before Darwin Local Court today.

Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said, "It is incredibly disappointing that a motorist, having known full well he was disqualified from driving, made a conscious decision to drive whilst intoxicated and under the influence of drugs.

This is precisely the behaviour police on our roads are looking to stamp out. It is also the behaviour that has contributed to the lives lost on Territory roads to number 18 so far this year, compared to 11 at the same time in 2020. It is pure luck, rather than good management that nobody was killed or seriously injured as a result of this driver's complete lack of regard for other users of a public road."
