A 32 year old woman has been arrested and charged after assaulting a police officer in Alice Springs last week.

A Police Officer was conducting POSI duties out the front of a Licensed premises on Eastside when he observed a man behaving in a disorderly manner on Friday evening, Northern Territory Police say.

The Officer was in the process of arresting the man when a woman attempted to hinder police. He managed to manoeuver the woman out of the way, at which point she has allegedly returned brandishing a weapon. The Officer subdued the woman using capsicum spray and she was subsequently arrested for Assaulting Police.

During the arrest the Officer received scratches to his arm that required medical treatment.

The woman was charged with one count each of Assault a Police Officer and Hinder a Police Officer and was remanded in custody to appear before the Alice Springs Local Court on May 21.

Acting Commander Bradley Currie said the Officer involved could have sustained more serious injuries during the incident.

"Assaulting Police Officers in the execution of their duties is not acceptable."

"Police are constantly working to make our community safer for everyone, unfortunately, like in this case they are subjected to being attacked during their efforts."
