Police officers assaulted, Far North

Police are extremely disappointed that in three separate incidents over the New Year period, four police officers were assaulted in the Far North district, Queensland Police say.

Police officer seriously assaulted, Edmonton: A 17-year-old male from Edmonton has been charged following the investigations into the alleged assault a male officer and alleged attempt assault of a female officer outside a Renton Close residence at around 11am on Friday December 30.

Police were called to the residence in relation to a disturbance. It is alleged that when officers attempted to escort a man across the road he produced a knuckle duster from his pocket and swung at both officers striking the male officer several times in the face. Witnesses came to the aid of the officers and assisted in restraining the man.

The male officer sought medical treatment for abrasions and bruising and swelling to his face.

The man was charged with serious assault of a police officer causing bodily harm, serious assault of a police officer whilst armed and unlawful possession of a category weapon. He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

Police officer seriously assaulted, Hopevale: A 21-year-old Cooktown woman has been charged over the alleged serious assault of a female police officer on Link Road at around 11am on January 1.

Police were attending to a large street disturbance when a woman allegedly ran at officers yelling aggressively. The woman then ran past police and in to the yard of a Link Road residence where she picked up a chair and threw it at a window. The woman was placed under arrest and while being escorted to the police vehicle, she allegedly struggled and punched the officer in the jaw. The woman then allegedly punched the window of the police vehicle before punching the female officer a second time in the head.

The officer sustained bruises, cuts and swelling to her mouth as a result of the alleged assault.

The woman was charged with seriously assaulting a police officer, wilful damage, committing a public nuisance, entering a dwelling with intent and assault occasioning bodily harm. She is scheduled to appear in the Cooktown Magistrates Court on January 9.

Serious assault police, Mission River (Cooktown): A 20-year-old Mission River woman was charged following the alleged assault of two police officers at a Kwokkunum Street residence at around 2pm on January 1.

Police were called to the home in relation to a disturbance and in attempting to break up a fight, a female police officer was allegedly punched in the jaw by a woman. The woman then fled to the kitchen area and allegedly threw a ceramic bowl at a male police officer striking him in the back. The woman then fled from the residence and allegedly threw a bowl at the police vehicle parked out front causing the window to smash.

The woman was restrained and taken into custody where she was later charged with serious assault of a police officer, serious assault of a police officer whilst armed and wilful damage of police property.

She is scheduled to appear at the Weipa Magistrates Court on January 17.

Both officers required medical treatment for bruising.
