Police probe after serious assault in Lake Illawarra

Police are investigating after a serious assault in the Lake Illawarra region, NSW Police say.

About 1.45pm yesterday, a 16-year-old boy was walking in a lane way between Beveridge Street and Tongarra Road, Albion Park, when he was approached by two unknown youths.

One of the boys allegedly hit the 16-year-old with a metal scooter to his head, before the pair fled the scene.

Emergency services were notified and the injured boy was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Wollongong Hospital in a critical condition.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 14-year-old boy yesterday.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Inquiries are continuing.
