Police have commenced an investigation after shots were fired into a house at Fairfield overnight, NSW Police say.

About 4.10am today tomorrow, police believe that a vehicle parked in Francis Street near the intersection of Coleraine Street.

The lone male occupant of the vehicle alighted and walked towards a house and discharged several shots from a handgun.

The man returned to the vehicle, described only as a light coloured utility, and drove away.
