Police Refocus as Court Cells Transfer in Alice Springs

NT Government

The Alice Springs Court Cells have officially transitioned from being a drain on police resources to being managed by G4S, returning police to doing what they do best - keeping Territorians safe.

As a result of this action, seven police officers are strengthening community safety and boosting police visibility across Alice Springs.

Chief Minister and Police Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the transfer of responsibility from police to G4S marked a clear shift from the past.

"For years under Labor, police were forced to pick up the slack for a broken corrections system and a government that had no plan to deal with rising crime or ballooning prisoner numbers," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"With no long-term plan in place, police were diverted into correctional duties, managing the ongoing care and custody of prisoners and coordinating scheduled court appearances, instead of keeping the community safe."

Under the Finocchiaro CLP Government, that has now changed.

"In our year of action, certainty and security, we have taken decisive action to fix Labor's mess, backing police and restoring them to their core duties," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"Going into 2026, we remain focused on reducing crime. We are already seeing good results from this year's work implementing stronger laws and giving police better powers.

"The latest crime statistics for Alice Springs show the number of victims of crime has decreased by 19%, representing 1,117 less victims in that community alone."

Operation Ludlow has commenced and continues, and the return of additional officers to policing means they can directly contribute to community safety during a traditionally heightened period of antisocial behaviour.

"Police are out on patrol, drones are back in use, stronger BDO powers are in place, and there are consequences for offending," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

Operation Ludlow remains ongoing across Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek, targeting repeat offenders and those who seek to evade justice.
