Police are appealing for dashcam footage as a critical incident investigation continues, after a teenager died following a police pursuit in the state's south.
About 10.55am last Tuesday (5 May 2026), police were patrolling the Mid-Western Highway, near Sawmill Road, Rankins Springs, about 60km north of Griffith, when they sighted a Mitsubishi, with South Australian number plates.
Officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attempted to stop the Mitsubishi; however, the driver failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
While travelling north-east, the Mitsubishi reportedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided head on with another vehicle.
The 17-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi died at the scene.
NSW Ambulance treated the 68-year-old female driver of the second vehicle. She was airlifted to Canberra hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A crime scene was established and a Critical Incident Team from Murray River Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
