Police Seek Info on Patumāhoe Collisions

Tāmaki Makaurau Police continue to investigate after a serious incident involving two separate collisions and multiple cars near Pukekohe last night.

About 6.40pm, Police were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on Patumāhoe Road, Patumāhoe.

Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson, Counties Manukau CIB, says that following the crash, one of the drivers allegedly stole a vehicle belonging to a member of the public who had stopped to assist at the scene.

"The vehicle was then driven back towards the crash scene, and members of the public and attending Police staff, were forced to take evasive action to avoid being struck.

"The driver then collided with four vehicles, including a Police car."

One person whose vehicle was struck suffered moderate injuries and was transported to hospital, Detective Senior Sergeant McPherson says.

"The alleged offender became trapped in the stolen vehicle following the collisions and is in Auckland Hospital in a serious condition.

"It is incredibly fortunate that nobody else was seriously injured. We could very easily have been dealing with a tragedy."

Support is being provided to those affected, including staff involved in the incident.

The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination, and the road has reopened.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and we would like to hear from anyone who may have information that could assist us.
