Police seek information after fatal boating incident at Wollongong

Police are appealing for public information as investigations continue into a fatal boating incident near Wollongong last month.

On Sunday 4 July 2021, officers attached to Wollongong Police District were notified after three men, who boarded a boat at Bellambi boat ramp about 2pm the previous day (Saturday 3 July 2021), did not return as scheduled.

A search commenced involving local police, the Marine Area Command and PolAir, as well as Surf Life Saving NSW and crews from Port Kembla and Shellharbour Marine Rescue.

The bodies of three men and an upturned boat were recovered off Port Kembla. They were formally identified as men aged 19, 42 and 44.

Detectives from the Marine Area Command established Strike Force Wheelwright to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

As inquiries continue, police have released an image of the vessel and urge anyone who saw it on the day of the incident to come forward.
