Police Seek Information After Ripponlea Synagogue Fire

Arson and Explosives Squad detectives are investigating a suspicious fire in Ripponlea this morning.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a synagogue on Glen Eira Avenue about 4.10am.

Police were told two men were inside the premises where they poured liquid on the floor.

They were disturbed by a man attending the synagogue and fled the scene.

It is understood the man who witnessed the incident sustained minor injuries to his hand and was treated at the scene.

Another man, who was also attending the premises, witnessed the incident and was not injured.

No one else was inside at the time and the synagogue sustained significant damage.

Police are working to establish the exact circumstances of the fire and at this stage believe it was a targeted incident.

Officers are patrolling the area and working with the synagogue and Jewish community to provide some community reassurance.

Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who observed any suspicious activity in the area prior to the fire.
