Yale University
The American writer Marilynne Robinson, author of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Gilead," visited Yale University this week as the latest guest in the Presidential Lecture Series, which brings prominent intellectuals to campus to inspire critical thought on some of the day's most complex issues.
In a wide-ranging lecture titled "What Now? Finding an American Future," Robinson explored the United States' current place in the world and defended the classic liberal arts education. Speaking to a crowd of students, faculty, and staff in a Yale University Art Gallery lecture hall on Wednesday, she argued that the teaching of the humanities is essential for maintaining strong civilizations.
