Police update 1: Armed robbery and assault, Nerang

Police have charged a man following the alleged armed robbery of a Nerang chemist this morning, during which an elderly man was assaulted.

It will be alleged that around 8.50am, a man armed with a firearm and tomahawk attended a chemist on Station Street and demanded prescription medication from the 36-year-old female attendant.

The woman complied, before the man ordered her to lock herself at the back of the property.

The woman ran out the back door and downstairs, where she advised a 70-year-old male employee that they were being robbed.

The 70-year-old then went upstairs where he confronted the man, before he was punched several times to the face.

The man then allegedly ran back to this vehicle with stolen prescription medication and fled in a northerly direction along Station Street.

The 70-year-old suffered minor facial injuries and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in stable condition.

A 24-year-old Mudgeeraba man was charged with armed robbery, serious assault of a person over 60, possessing drug utensils, and two counts each of entering a premises with intent to commit an indictable offence and possessing a dangerous drug.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
