Police update 3: Search and rescue operation, Torres Strait

The Queensland Police Service's air and sea search for five people missing in the Torres Strait after their vessel was reported overdue on July 31 has concluded.

Given the seafaring nature of the Torres Strait, some community members will make surface-based searches in their own boats, weather conditions permitting.

An extensive search and rescue operation was conducted for the group after their seven-metre vessel departed Badu Island at around 3pm on July 31 with plans to travel to Dauan Island. It was reported overdue after failing to arrive.

Five members of the Dauan Island community were onboard the boat, a 22-year-old man, a 47-year-old man, two women aged 21 and a 9-year-old boy.

Their empty boat was located approximately 4.5 kms west of Dauan Island at around 1.50pm on August 1. The boat has been recovered and will be examined by experts.

Police have liaised closely with the families on both Dauan Island and at Bamiga and discussed the sad news regarding the likelihood of survival.

Our thoughts are with the families and the community at this very difficult time.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Investigations have concluded that a child's body located near Old Mawatta Village on mainland Papua New Guinea on August 2 is unrelated to this incident.
