Police update: Search and rescue operation, Hinchinbrook Island

Police searching for a missing man at Hinchinbrook Island have confirmed human remains have been located in the area.

The 69-year-old was last seen around 3pm on Thursday and failed to return from fishing in Gayundah Creek.

Last night Wildlife officers located what are believed to be human remains in the search area.

At this stage, police believe the remains are those of the missing man, however forensic testing will be required to confirm this.

Police with the assistance of State Emergency Service volunteers, Coast Guard personnel, officers from the Department of Environment and Science and local fishermen continue to search the area.

Department of Environment and Science (DES) Wildlife Officers are today continuing their search for a crocodile.

One team is already at the site and a second crew will be there shortly.

Please report any crocodile sightings to DES immediately through the Qwildlife app.

Our thoughts are with the family at this time.
