Police are urging all boat owners planning to go out on the water this long weekend to ensure their vessel and equipment are in serviceable condition, Tasmania Police say.
"Statistics shows the majority of boating incidents on our waterways occur over long weekends and holiday periods and as we head into the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, it’s timely to remind boat owners to ensure their vessel and safety equipment are in good working condition," said Sergeant Rod Stacey from Marine and Rescue Services.
"Unfortunately in recent months we have seen a number of boating incidents on our waterways which, in some cases, have had tragic consequences.
"Police want people to enjoy their time out on the water, but importantly, we want people to make it home safe as well.
"It’s vital that boats are in good condition and that safety equipment including life jackets, flares, and EPIRBs are stored in a place on the boat where they can be easily located should they be needed in an emergency."
Police are urging boat owners and users to:
- Plan your trip – remain vigilant with the weather conditions, make sure someone knows where you intend on going and when you anticipate you’ll be back – and don’t change those plans without telling someone.
- Don’t take unnecessary risks when boating – know your own limitations, the limitations of your boat and the areas you are operating in.
- Have the essential safety gear required – including life jackets, serviceable flares, mobile phones in water-proof covers, marine radios and other essential equipment. Life jackets must be in good condition and worn by everyone on-board. For inflatable style jackets – make sure they are properly serviced and maintained – and importantly that the person wearing it knows how to activate it should it be needed.
- Never mix alcohol and boating – it can be a potentially fatal mix when out on the water.
Marine police will have a strong presence on the water around the state this long-weekend.
