The University of Tasmania has welcomed the Australian Government's announcement that international students studying in Hobart will now be eligible for additional post-study work rights.
This means eligible University of Tasmania students studying anywhere in the State can access an additional year on their Second Post Higher Education Work Stream Temporary Graduate Visa, making Tasmania more attractive as a study destination and helping to support local business and communities.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black said international students make a valuable contribution to the University and to Tasmania.
"International students enrich our communities, support key industries, and build global connections. As graduates, they help address local workforce needs," Professor Black said.
"This important policy change strengthens Tasmania's competitiveness in international education at a time when our communities face critical shortages in areas like engineering, agriculture, health and ICT."
The University acknowledges the strong support from Tasmania's federal representatives, including Senator Richard Dowling, Minister Julie Collins MP, Senator Carol Brown, and Senator Jonno Duniam, whose advocacy was instrumental in securing this outcome.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Services and Operations Craig Barling said careful growth in international student numbers was important for the University's ongoing financial sustainability.
"This change creates a fairer playing field for the University and ensures we can attract students to the high quality, unique educational experience that Tasmania offers," Mr Barling said.
"Attracting more students from around the world supports the University's broad offerings for Tasmanian students in all regions of the State."
