Political interference in RTI process laid bare

  • RTI officer tells Labor to seek information through the Premier's Media Unit
  • Actions speak louder than words
  • Peter Gutwein has transformed Tasmania into The Secret State
  • Premier, Peter Gutwein's, claimed commitment to transparency is not backed by the evidence.

Labor Shadow Attorney General, Ella Haddad, said the Tasmanian Liberal Government had been outed by the Ombudsman as the most secretive in the country.

"In Parliament and in Estimates Peter Gutwein has claimed Right to Information requests are decided at arms' length of government," Ms Haddad said..

"He is attempting to reinvent his image as an open and transparent Premier but there is no getting away from his Government's appalling record of secrecy.

"The Premier and his Ministers have created a culture for how agencies should handle Right to Information requests. The expectation is to fight the release of information - particularly information that might be damaging to government."

Today Labor produced evidence that RTI officers had asked Members of Parliament whether they had attempted to seek information through the Government Media Unit.

"That is completely inappropriate under any reading of the RTI Act. It effectively forces political interference in the RTI process.

"It points directly to the culture of secrecy that this government has imposed on their departments.

"The Premier can claim to be committed to improving RTI processes but actions speak louder than words."
