Family First National Director Lyle Shelton has expressed the party's best wishes for Dr Helen Haines as she fights for her life after she was run down by a man driving a four-wheel drive yesterday.
"We are praying for her speedy recovery, and for her family. We also pray for our nation that political violence does not become normalised."
Mr Shelton said yesterday's attack brought back traumatic memories for him and his former staff at the Australian Christian Lobby when same-sex marriage activist Jaden Duong firebombed their office days before Christmas 2016.
"Ten years ago as we were fighting to preserve the definition of marriage in law, we were targeted because of our political beliefs.
"At the time the Australian Federal Police denied that the attack was targeted at us or that it was politically, religiously or ideologically motivated.
"That was proven false months later during the court process when journalists accessed the police transcripts of interview with the assailant.
"Sadly politically motivated violence is not new and vigilance is required to ensure violence is not incited against people who participate in public life," Mr Shelton said.
