'Popeye' to be rehomed

Mitchell Shire Council is reminding residents of the importance in registering their cats and dogs, and updating details, after a small Chihuahua, affectionately dubbed Popeye, could not find his way home.

The small dog was handed to a Mitchell Shire Ranger, but it was found the young male dog had been microchipped - but the owners never changed the details and the breeder was still listed.

During a visit to the vet, it was found that Popeye's eye was decomposing and would need to be removed. After an extensive callout for his owner, Council, the vet and Save A Dog Scheme (SADS) ultimately made the decision to have the surgery performed.

Little Popeye was taken into foster care by a Mitchell Shire Council staff member and will be taken to SADS to be rehomed. The little dog's sweet and friendly nature make him an ideal candidate for rehoming post-surgery.

This case is a reminder of how important it is to update microchip details, especially after adopting a new furry friend.

SADS, who have long been partnered with Mitchell Shire Council, have agreed to rehome Popeye and residents interested in adopting Popeye, or one of the many other dogs and cats available right now, should enquire with Save A Dog Scheme directly. Please call 03 9824 7928 or click here

Dog and cat registrations are important as it allows Council to find owners and get animals home as soon as possible.

The first time a dog is picked up by Council, officers will work with owners on how to proactively avoid the animal getting lost again. The second time may result in further action.

If a dog or cat is not registered, Council is unable to release the animal until it is registered. Every dog and cat over three months old are required to be registered with Council. To be registered, all animals must be microchipped.
