Spring has sprung and so has the grass!
While this means more leaves on the trees and more flowers in bloom, changeable weather can present challenges for our mowing team with the mix of sunshine and rain causing grass to grow at a faster rate than normal.
Council is responsible for mowing more than 600 of our local parks, bushland and reserves.
Grass maintenance on nature strips next and roadsides is shared with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) depending on the road type. Local streets such as Peppermint Grove, Knoxfield or Tyner Road, Wantirna South are mowed by Council whereas DTP manage main roads such as Burwood Highway and Stud Road. Our team typically follows a 4 weekly mowing cycle, however, there may be times during spring when mowing is limited or delayed.
If grounds are too wet due to lots of rain it can be unsafe for our mowers and mowing machines to access the areas safely. If surfaces are saturated, it's best to avoid mowing as our machines could cause long term damage and prevent grass regrowth. Sometimes we might only be able to mow some sections of a reserve, rather than the entire area. Our team will plan to return when the ground dries up.
Also, in instances where grass is taller than normal, it can take a bit longer to cut.
