Premier cannot justify job cuts by conning Tasmanians

Tasmanian Labor
  • Premier misleads Tasmanians on lower energy prices
  • Tries to justify job cuts with non-existent household savings
  • The Government must intervene in Hydro
  • Premier Peter Gutwein cannot justify his Government's clear plan to privatise Hydro and undertake mass sackings by trying to con Tasmanians with lower energy prices.

Shadow Minister for Energy David O'Byrne said last Tuesday Peter Gutwein attempted to justify sacking 50 Hydro workers by saying it would lower prices.

"Last week Peter Gutwein's statement on energy prices being lowered by the mass sackings is at odds with the Hydro CEO," Mr O'Byrne said.

"Six days prior to the Premier's statement, the Government's hand-picked CEO of Hydro, Evangelista Albertini said the proposed organisational changes will not impact energy security or electricity prices which is completely different to what the Premier has said.

"Peter Gutwein is trying to con Tasmanians into thinking they will get cheaper energy prices, when that is clearly not true.

"Peter Gutwein is also misleading Tasmanians by claiming his Government is not privatising the Hydro when he has refused to rule out the sale of wholly owned subsidiaries Momentum and Entura.

"The Premier must intervene to say no to privatisation and to save Hydro jobs.

"He cannot continue to mislead Tasmanians with lower electricity prices when in reality people are losing their jobs."
