Premier must commit to transparency in breach investigations

Southern Tasmania's recent COVID lockdown has shown the community is prepared to band together to keep one another safe.

To repay this goodwill, now is the time for the Premier to provide transparency in the investigation into how a breach of hotel quarantine was allowed to happen.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said Tasmanians right across the state deserved praise for their continued commitment to keeping the community safe by getting tested and vaccinated during the lockdown.

"All Tasmanians deserve praise for rolling up their sleeves and getting vaccinated, along with getting tested in big numbers," Ms White said.

"The past few days have shown how committed Tasmanians are to keeping each other safe.

"In particular I want to congratulate the residents in the Brighton municipality who have come out in their hundreds to be vaccinated, jumping to 11th from 20th in the ranking of the most vaccinated local government area in the state.

"I'd like to thank both the community and our hardworking health workers for their efforts."

Ms White said now that the state had emerged from the three-day lockdown, it was time for the government to commit to publicly releasing the findings of the two investigations into quarantine breaches currently being undertaken.

"Tasmanians have every right to know how the 31-year-old man was able to breach hotel quarantine in Hobart and they have every right to know how a 15-year-old in home quarantine in Launceston could do the same.

"After the recent case of a 15-year-old who breached home quarantine, the Premier said it could not be allowed to occur again.

"The fact is it has happened again, this time from a hotel.

"The Premier has promised to investigate both these breaches, but now he must commit to making the findings public.

"Tasmanians need to know that the Government has acted swiftly to ensure the quarantine system is well enough resourced and strong enough so that no further breaches happen."
