Premier must provide close contact clarity

Tasmanian Labor

Premier Peter Gutwein must explain to Tasmanians whether the decision to change the definition of a close contact was based on public health advice or to relieve pressure on our ailing health system.

Acting Labor Leader and Shadow Health Minister Anita Dow said Labor notes South Australia has confirmed they will continue to class people with greater than 15 minutes of contact as a close contact.

"The Premier must come out today and explain to Tasmanians what public health advice informed yesterday's close contact changes," Ms Dow said.

"The Premier has repeatedly said he will make decisions based on public health advice so he should release that information to clear up confusion about why the definition of a close contact has changed.

"The definition of a close contact has consequences not just for our health system but also for our community and economy.

"Questions are continuing to arise about this important issue and it is up to the Premier to explain what it means to the Tasmanian community and Tasmanian workers.

"Now that Mr Gutwein has opened the border to COVID and we are at this critical phase in the pandemic transparency is vital."
