A well-prepared property is more likely to survive fire. With the warmer months ahead, now's the time to take a few simple steps that can make a big difference when fire risk increases.
Start outside and focus on practical actions:
- Clear gutters and remove leaves, bark and debris around buildings
- Mow or slash grass and weeds to less than 10 centimetres in height
- Trim low branches and vegetation near buildings and fences
- Remove rubbish, garden waste and other flammable materials
If you live on a rural or semi-rural property, take extra precautions:
- Reduce fuel loads for at least 20 metres around homes, boundary fences and neighbours' assets
- Build a fire-safe paddock or refuge area for stock by creating a mineral earth break and keeping fuel loads low
- Create a 10-metre firebreak around any property boundary that adjoins a township
Council is also doing its bit to prepare for the fire season with the annual roadside slashing program and fire prevention property inspections starting soon, as well as preparing through our parks and open space maintenance program.
