Bindelong Aboriginal Corporation is planning to conduct a prescribed culturally informed cool burn in Hillsborough from Tuesday 19 May to Tuesday 16 June 2026, between 9am and 7pm, weather permitting.

The burn will be undertaken by Bindelong Aboriginal Corporation contractors on behalf of Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land Council and Hunter Local Land Services, on Lot 86 DP 1315859.

This will be conducted as a low intensity burn for the purposes of cultural and environmental land management practices in partnership with Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land Council (Landowner) and Hunter Local Land Services.

Safety precautions

As the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the following:

  • Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
  • Outdoor items such as furniture and trampolines should be either taken inside or covered. Where this is not practical, items should be hosed down regularly to prevent ember damage
  • Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
  • Remove washing from clotheslines
  • Ensure pets have a protected area
  • If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on
  • Obey the instructions of traffic controllers and emergency services
  • Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
  • If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
