The list of reasons why the Prime Minister needs to meet the US President keeps getting longer.
The US has sped up its plan to impose pharmaceutical tariffs of up to 250 per cent as early as next week - a move that would hit Australian producers hard.
Shadow Minister for Trade, Investment and Tourism, Kevin Hogan said the US imports more than $2 billion worth of Australian pharmaceuticals a year. This represents over 40 per cent of Australia's total pharmaceutical export market.
"While other world leaders have met with the US President, Prime Minister Albanese has failed to secure a meeting – despite having 275 days to do so" Mr Hogan said.
"Australia avoided harsher tariffs last week only because the US has a trade surplus with us – not because of any advocacy or effort from the Prime Minister.
"There are still serious questions with no answers about key biosecurity protections on beef.
"It's time for the Prime Minister to urgently seek assurances to protect Australian jobs and industries."
