A new sporting complex in North Kellyville could bear the name of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Hills residents are invited to have their say on the proposal.
The Hills Shire Council has proposed a local sporting complex project, with the current working title of Stringer Road Reserve, be officially named Queen Elizabeth II Reserve.
Construction on the North Kellyville reserve is underway and expected to be complete by December 2024, weather permitting.
The Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi said the proposal was a fitting local tribute.
"Queen Elizabeth II was a most extraordinary woman, with her service to the world replicated by very few. Her reign was the longest in history, and Her Majesty always put service above self, whether it was working as a mechanic during World War II or supporting countless causes over her 70 years on the throne," Mayor Gangemi said.
"Her Late Majesty was much-loved and respected by Hills residents, and I am pleased we can commemorate her inspirational life by naming this sporting complex in her honour.
"Residents and visitors will cherish this reserve for years to come.
"It will include four multi-purpose sports fields, an amenities building, a carpark, shared pathways, a playground, multi-purpose basketball courts, cricket practice nets, and more.
"Residents are invited to have their say and their feedback will play a vital role in naming this new reserve."
Submissions can be made on Council's website, www.thehills.nsw.gov.au, under the 'Have your Say' tab until 4:30pm on Friday, 2 June 2023.
Meanwhile, Council continues to work with local Indigenous groups and Elders on suitable park locations and names to commemorate Australia's First Nations people.
"My first-ever motion as the Mayor was to announce changes that would better recognise our Indigenous people and create a more united Hills Shire," Mayor Gangemi said.
"This included the naming of a major park for our indigenous community."
"We want to commemorate our First Nations people and the positive impact they have made caring for Country over thousands of years.
"I look forward to sharing these details with residents very soon."
