Protect Riverland and avoid fine

Hill residents looking to take a trip into the Riverland need to be aware of the most recent quarantine rules, in place to protect the area from destructive fruit fly.

Previously travellers were able to bring a receipt to show proof of purchase for fruit and vegetables, however new changes mean that the 'bring a receipt' rule is no longer recognised.

With or without a receipt, you cannot take fruit or vegetables that are at risk from fruit fly into the Riverland.

What you can't take:

  • Stone fruits
  • Citrus fruits
  • Fruiting vegetables (including tomatoes, capsicums, chillies)
  • Pome fruits (including apples and pears)
  • Loquats, figs, and feijoas
  • Tropical fruit (including bananas, avocado, and mangoes)

Check a comprehensive list of banned fruits and vegetables here.

Pack thoughtfully before your trip and eat your at-risk fruit and veg before reaching the area, or use the quarantine bins at entry points to the Riverland. When you arrive, local shops will be selling a full range of fruit and vegetables, so you can eat your favourites while supporting local.

What you can take:

  • Leafy greens (including lettus, spinach, and kale)
  • Brassica crops (including cauliflower, cabbages, and broccoli)
  • Onions, carrots, and potatoes
  • Watermelons and pumpkins
  • Canned, frozen, or cooked fruit

Check a comprehensive list of approved fruits and vegetables here.

Thank you for helping to keep our neighbours in the Riverland safe from fruit fly.
