Tasmania is endowed with over 40,000 years of Aboriginal heritage and the Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to its protection.
In 2017 the Government renamed the Aboriginal Relics Act 1975 to the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975 and addressed many other outdated and problematic parts of the Act, adding a requirement to review the Act within 3 years to identify further areas for improvement.
This process is well underway with the first stage, a 16-week public consultation period, closing in September. Comments from the submissions received are summarised in a feedback report published today on the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment website.
The feedback will help inform the second stage of the review which will involve a further, more targeted consultation on responses to the issues raised.
A report presenting the findings of the review is expected to be tabled in Parliament towards the end of 2020.
