Protecting Wildlife On Point Waylen Foreshore

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Australian Government is providing $850,000 to help restore the foreshore at Point Waylen in Western Australia.

The project will fix damaged areas along the Swan River within the Melville Bird Sanctuary. The work will help keep the river healthy and protect plants and animals.

The project will:

  • Plant native trees and plants
  • Repair damaged riverbanks
  • Protect and restore important bird habitat
  • Improve community connection to the foreshore.

More than 131 types of birds can be found within the Melville Bird Sanctuary. This includes the critically endangered and internationally protected Eastern Curlew. Restoring the foreshore will help keep these birds safe.

The project will be led by the City of Melville in partnership with the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Work will begin by mid-2026 and is expected to finish in late 2027.

The funding is provided through the Australian Government's Local Environmental Projects Program. It supports local projects that care for the environment.
