Protest Activity At Olympic Dam

Protest activity continued today near the BHP Olympic Dam site.

About 5am on Wednesday 8 July, protesters gathered outside the mine gates and started a small fire on the side of the road.

The fire was quickly extinguished, with no damage and minimal disruption to traffic.

It will be alleged that protesters behaved aggressively towards fire crews when they were attempting to put out the fire. Police deployed capsicum spray for the safety of the emergency service workers.

There were no arrests.

Heavy rain has seen protesters pack up and leave the area.

Police will continue to monitor and respond to any further protest activity or any offences.

Police thank BHP and the local Roxby Downs community for the patience and assistance in this matter.

Anyone engaging in protest activity is reminded that while lawful protest is a democratic right, actions that obstruct traffic, endanger public safety or interfere with lawful business operations may result in police action.
