Protest arrests, Surfers Paradise

Police have arrested two men following an incident at a planned protest at Surfers Paradise this afternoon.

Around 4.40pm, members of the Kurdish community were walking south along the Esplanade in an authorised demonstration when a man approached the group of about 50 demonstrators and assaulted one of them.

Police arrested the man without incident. Minutes later another man approached the group and a physical altercation ensued.

Multiple people were capsicum sprayed.

The planned demonstration was allowed to continue with police facilitating demonstrators through the Surfers Paradise CBD.

A 27-year-old man from New South Wales and a 39-year-old man from Teneriffe were charged with public nuisance.
