From murals to sculptures, Colac Otway Shire Council is seeking the community's input on a new draft strategy guiding public art projects in the shire.

The draft policy lays out how Council can acquire artworks, such as through donations and commissioning new works, and how art would be selected and approved.

Under the policy, Council will consider factors including the artwork's relevance to the community's history and culture, the quality and innovation of the artwork, the economic and social impact of the piece, and whether the artwork will complement its surrounds.

The cost, durability and maintenance of artworks would also come into consideration.

Economy and Creative Industries Manager Heidi Taylor said the draft Public Art Policy reflects Council's commitment to creating vibrant, welcoming public places that celebrate the unique character of our Shire.

"This policy gives our community clear pathways to get involved in shaping the look and feel of our public spaces, helping people understand how they can contribute to the creative character of our towns.

"We're encouraging public art that sparks joy, tells local stories, delights locals and draws visitors, bringing life to our streets and benefiting local businesses," she said.

"I encourage artists, residents, and community groups to explore the draft policy and share their ideas."

Council is seeking the community's input on the draft policy. To read the draft policy or to make a submission by 3 September, visit the Have Your Say section of the Council website.

Submitters can also register to speak at an upcoming Submissions Committee Meeting.

The draft Public Art Policy is open for public comment until 5pm on Wednesday, 3 September.
