Public Input Sought for Bass Highway Upgrade Designs

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is focused on building safer and more efficient roads all around Tasmania as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.

We're seeking community feedback on preliminary designs for upgrading a section of the Bass Highway between Launceston and Devonport, north of Sassafras.

Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said this upgrade is one of six high priority projects that were identified in the 2023 Bass Highway Devonport to Launceston Corridor Strategy.

"We look forward to hearing the public's feedback on the designs which feature several safety and efficiency improvements to a section of the highway between Latrobe and Sassafras," Mr Vincent said.

"The designs include upgrades to widen the road shoulders, construction of a safety barrier to separate traffic travelling along either side of the highway and new, safer turning facilities.

"The upgrades will improve safety for road users by reducing the risk of head on collisions and providing safer turning opportunities," he said.

Members of the public can provide feedback on the preliminary designs from Monday, 12 May 2025 to Monday, 2 June 2025. An information session with the project team will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at the Hamilton Hub, Latrobe, providing community members the opportunity to provide feedback in person.

"Feedback gained during the consultation period will help inform future detailed designs for the upgrades," Mr Vincent said.

"$50 million has been committed to the project by the Australian and Tasmanian governments, split $40 million and $10 million respectively," he said.
