Public Input Sought on Northside Hospital Project

The ACT Government is inviting the community to have their say on the proposed declaration of the Northside Hospital Project as a Territory Priority Project (TPP) under the Planning Act 2023.

This declaration would recognise the project's significance in delivering critical healthcare infrastructure to support Canberra's growing population.

"The Northside Hospital Project is a major ACT Government commitment to develop a modern, integrated health precinct that will expand emergency, surgical and inpatient services for the northside community," said Minister Stephen-Smith.

"The project will deliver a new state-of-the-art hospital in Canberra's north which will provide care for Canberrans for decades to come, helping to meet the growing demand for public healthcare driven by population growth, an ageing community, and evolving health needs.

"The project will be the largest investment in healthcare infrastructure in the Territory's history, with more than $1 billion provisioned and design work well underway following previous community consultation."

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the Government is committed to commencing construction in this term and encourages Canberrans to have their say in shaping this important project.

As part of the project, a series of early and enabling works are planned to prepare the site for future development. These works include:

  1. Diversion and realignment of existing services infrastructure.
  2. Relocation of key facilities such as the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) services, and a childcare centre.
  3. Associated demolition works.

There will be further opportunities for the community to engage in the design and construction phases through future planning processes following consultation on the TPP declaration.

Minister for Planning and Sustainable Development Chris Steel said Infrastructure Canberra has proposed the Northside Hospital Project be declared as a Territory Priority Project.

"I encourage the community and other stakeholders to have their say on the proposed declaration of the Northside Hospital Project as a Territory Priority Project," said Minister Steel.

"If declared the project would exempt the project from third party appeals. I would like to hear the community's views on the proposal through comments to Territory Planning Authority, which I will consider before I make a decision on the declaration."

Have your say on the proposed Territory Priority Project declaration until 27 November 2025 on the ACT Planning website.
