Griffith is flying high, with Qantas naming one of its Q400 aircraft after the city as the airline boosts services on the Griffith to Sydney route.
The 78-seat Q400, proudly bearing the name 'Griffith', touched down at Griffith Regional Airport on Tuesday 8 September, marking a significant milestone for the city's connection with Qantas.
Qantas has also announced two additional return services each week, providing greater flexibility for passengers travelling between Griffith and Sydney.
The new services will operate on Fridays, departing Sydney at 6.05am and Griffith at 8.05am, and Mondays, departing Sydney at 5pm and Griffith at 6.55pm.
QantasLink CEO Mark Dal Pra said "As an airline born in outback Australia, we are proud of the role we play in keeping regional communities connected. Our continued investment in our Q400 fleet is an important part of our ability to serve regional Australia into the future. Having our 11th additional aircraft named after Griffith land in its namesake destination is an exciting milestone in our fleet renewal program.
"QantasLink's ongoing fleet renewal enables a better customer experience, as these faster, quieter aircraft continue to join our fleet."
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, welcomed the announcement, saying the aircraft naming and additional services were a positive sign for Griffith. "Having a Qantas aircraft named after Griffith is a fantastic recognition of our city and the important role our regional airport plays in connecting our community with Sydney and beyond," Mayor Curran said. "The additional services are also great news for our residents, businesses and visitors, providing more choice and greater flexibility when travelling.
"This is a strong vote of confidence in Griffith and our region, and we look forward to continuing to build on our relationship with Qantas."
