Quality and safety for older Australians in aged care is paramount

In response to individual stories on the ABC’s Four Corners program last night, Ms Sparrow, ACSA CEO said:

"The stories as retold on Four Corners last night are unacceptable. They fall well short of the standards of care all Australians expect for our elders".

"It is the reasonable expectation of all Australians that where there are concerns about quality and safety and the welfare of their loved ones in care, that the regulatory system functions effectively to identify and address any concerns".

Much work is already underway on improving and strengthening the safety and quality system acting on the recommendations of the Carnell-Paterson Review.

So far, that has led to the introduction of unannounced visits from 1 July, 2018 and the creation of a new single Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission from 1 January, next year. Further changes, including new quality standards (from 1 July, 2019) and the introduction of performance reporting against those standards are still to be introduced.

"Consumers, the community and providers all need firm but fair regulation that is both transparent and protects the principles of safety and quality of life. Regulation that identifies and holds to account those who abuse and neglect."

"It’s important the recently announced Royal Commission give members of the community the opportunity to voice their concerns about the adequacy of Australia’s aged care system and regulation."

ACSA will work co-operatively with the Morrison Government’s Royal Commission to create a regulatory system on which we can all rely."
