Western Downs Regional Council has completed a $270,000 upgrade of the Tara Showgrounds to boost usage of the facility and deliver quality essential infrastructure in the community
As part of the project, the facility's electrical and sewerage systems have been overhauled, allowing for a more reliable space for community initiatives and tourist events.
Council Spokesperson for Strategic Communications and Council Facilities Councillor Megan James said the upgrades would ensure the showgrounds continued to cater to the needs of the community.
"Council is committed to ensuring our recreational spaces and community facilities are attractive, safe and accessible and this project is about delivering upgrades that ensure the Tara Showgrounds can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors," Cr James says.
"As part of this project, Council has upgraded the transformer and switchboards, and delivered a major upgrade of the sewerage system which involved a new pump station, gravity sewerage line, and pressure sewerage line."
Cr James said the Tara Showgrounds was the home of one of the region's premier destination events, and this upgrade was an important part of supporting economic growth.
"The biennial Tara Festival of Culture & Camel Races is a huge drawcard for the region that attracts thousands of people, so it's important to ensure we have the facilities in place to support large numbers of people which ultimately benefits our local economy," she said.
"The Showgrounds is also a much-loved hub for community events such as the annual Tara Show and camp drafting meets, and the sewerage upgrade is also designed to support surrounding sites such as the Polocrosse Club, Cricket Club, and Golf Club.
"The Founders Pavilion and grandstand roofs are also being re-sheeted, adding to the improvements delivered at this important community facility.
"It's been fantastic partnering with several local contractors including MPC Contractors, Abbott Electrical, K&R Plumbing, and Fyfe Surveyors to deliver this project.
"These upgrades will go a long way to support the needs of the community while encouraging larger-scale events in the area."
