Townsville City Council's bird aviary project in Queens Gardens had commenced, with the decommissioning of the old rose garden where the new aviary will be located.
The tender for the construction of a new aviary was awarded to W & F Constructions at the March Full Council meeting.
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said it is great to see construction of the new bird aviary beginning.
"Queens Gardens is a much-loved place in the city and the bird aviary has been an important attraction in the area since the 1930's," Cr Greaney said.
"The new aviary will be modern and provide residents great viewing opportunities for the birds housed in Queens Gardens."
Council will continue to consult with the community about what birds will be housed in the aviary closer to the expected completion date of early July.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the construction of a new aviary is part of a commitment made to upgrades parks and open spaces across the community.
"The bird aviary project is another promise that Council is delivering for residents," Cr Hill said.
"A local firm is delivering the works and the construction of the aviary will support 10 local jobs for the life of the project."
