Queensland digs deep to kick off Red Shield Appeal

The Palaszczuk Government has kicked off the Salvation Army's 2019 Red Shield Appeal with a $100,000 donation to support vulnerable people across the state.

Minister for Communities Coralee O'Rourke today (April 4) announced the donation at the launch of the 2019 Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal at a breakfast in Brisbane.

"We recognise the important role of The Salvation Army in providing support and services to vulnerable Queenslanders," Mrs O'Rourke said.

"That is why the Palaszczuk Government is proud to be supporting the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal.

"The Salvos have long supported Queensland communities through addiction rehabilitation, aged care, court and prison support, domestic and family violence, financial assistance, finding employment, housing and homelessness support, learn to drive, legal services, positive lifestyle programs, rural support and youth services.

"Recently, we have seen this organisation's outstanding effort to support North Queenslanders affected by this year's flood event.

"I am proud to announce that we are once again donating $100,000 to the Red Shield Appeal and I would encourage all Queenslanders to dig deep and donate to this year's appeal."

The Red Shield Appeal runs over the months of April, May and June, with doorknockingtaking place on May 25 and 26. The Queensland Government has supported the Red Shield Appeal since 2006.

In addition to the Red Shield Appeal donation, The Salvation Army also receives Palaszczuk Government funding of more than $350,000 per year in Emergency Relief Funding and almost $250,000 per year in Financial Literacy and Resilience Funding in Mount Isa and the Lockyer Valley.

Mrs O'Rourke said supporting the Salvation Army and its Red Shield Appeal was another example of the Palaszczuk Government's commitment to creating thriving communities.

"We want to create thriving communities where people, regardless of their personal circumstances, are able to participate and be included in their communities, be resilient and enjoy social and economic wellbeing," she said.

"We are committed to ensuring that investment in community services is achieving desired outcomes for Queenslanders.

"The Salvation Army is known for its unwavering assistance to vulnerable Queenslanders and I applaud them for the work they do."
