Queensland Man Sentenced for Possessing Violent Extremist Material

A Brisbane man has been sentenced by the Brisbane District Court over the possession of violent extremism material (VEM).

On 3 December, 2025, the AFP's National Security Investigations (NSI) team executed a search warrant at a house in the Brisbane suburb of Manly, where a review of the man's mobile phone identified VEM.

The 21-year-old was charged and remanded in custody.

On 7 July, 2026, the man pled guilty to one count of possessing or controlling violent extremist material, contrary to section 474.45C of the Criminal Code (Cth).

On Monday (28 September, 2026) he was sentenced to time served, having spent 299 days in custody since his arrest. The man was released from custody the same day.

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October 2025 to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including those targeting high office holders and federal parliamentarians.
