New priority development area to unlock homes for Queenslanders sooner
- New North Harbour Priority Development Area (PDA) proposed for City of Moreton Bay to deliver more homes sooner.
- Around 200 homes will be unlocked straight away, with more than 3,700 dwellings to be built in the PDA over the next 15 years.
- Plans given green light after 10 years of delay under Labor.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering a new Priority Development Area (PDA) to build more than 3,700 new homes in the region, unlocking more housing for Queenslanders.
Located at Burpengary East, the new PDA will deliver a range of new housing options supporting the Crisafulli Government's plan to boost supply and ease Labor's Housing Crisis.
Once the PDA is declared, up to 200 homes will be built in an early release area while the more detailed planning for the rest of the PDA is undertaken in partnership with City of Moreton Bay, the local community and the developer.
The new North Harbour PDA will also make a significant contribution to the local economy with the development of a new marina and associated industry as well as retail, tourism and hotel facilities.
The new PDA will build on the existing North Harbour development, already home to 3,000 residents and recognised as one of five significant projects in the City of Moreton Bay Regional Economic Development Strategy 2020 – 2041.
Development stalled at the site for a decade under Labor, leaving Queenslanders locked out of the dream of home ownership.
The housing boost is expected to generate almost 2,000 jobs and add $456 million into the regional economy.
The proposal follows the declaration of a new PDA in Southern Thornlands to unlock around 8,000 homes, and complements the landmark $2 billion Residential Activation Fund to kick-start critical housing infrastructure across the State.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said declaration of the new PDA would cut red tape and get new homes built sooner, supporting the growing City of Moreton Bay.
"The Crisafulli Government has proposed this priority development area to kick-start housing supply and get more Queenslanders into homes sooner," Deputy Premier Bleijie said.
"We are unlocking land to deliver more housing for Queenslanders, while funding critical infrastructure and axing stamp duty for first homeowners on new builds, all aimed at stemming Labor's Housing Crisis.
"While Labor tied up builders and councils in red tape, we're resetting the planning partnership with local councils and communities to deliver new housing in the right locations."
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the PDA declaration for North Harbour was a welcome boon that would inject millions into the local economy.
"The construction of apartments and standalone housing will further boost the economy and provide another option for people looking to live in City of Moreton Bay," Mayor Flannery said.
"The development of a marina at the site will unlock a new local marine industry, from boatbuilding to repairs, generating more skilled employment opportunities for our residents."
