Questions remain over Launceston TasTAFE closure

Tasmanian Labor
  • Will Hodgman to close TasTAFE Launceston CBD
  • Rockliff fails to answer basic questions on closure
  • Will Hodgman and Jeremy Rockliff were caught napping yesterday when the Examiner revealed they planned to shut the doors on TasTAFE's Launceston CBD campus.

Today in Parliament, Jeremy Rockliff failed to provide any detail on the plans for the Launceston site.

Shadow Minister for TAFE, University and Skills Michelle O'Byrne said that the Government had failed to consult the community and must urgently answer questions over the shock closure.

"Jeremy Rockliff could not provide any detail on his plans for the Launceston campus today, or whether he or anyone from the Government has been discussing details of a potential sale," Ms O'Byrne said.

"The Liberals have form keeping potential privatisations secret, whether it be the Treasury Building or former Minister Matthew Groom's Memorandum of Understanding to transfer TasTAFE's Hobart Campus in Campbell Street to the University.

"Jeremy Rockliff could not provide any information on where funding for the upgrades at the Alanvale campus would come from.

"And he could not answer why other education facilities need to be in the city, but TasTAFE does not.

"TAFE is broken under Will Hodgman and Jeremy Rockliff but they are still determined to shut the Launceston CBD campus.

"With 5600 full time jobs destroyed since the election, the Government should be increasing opportunities for skills training, not cutting them."

    Michelle O'Byrne MP

Shadow TAFE, University and Skills Minister
