With heavy rain continuing to fall across the Townsville region, the Ross River Dam is likely to hit 100 percent in the next 12 to 24 hours, triggering the radial gates to automatically open by 0.25 metres for a controlled release.
Townsville Local Disaster Management Group Chair Nick Dametto said with the dam currently sitting at about 93 percent and the forecast showing the region was set to receive further rain, the radial gate opening would allow for a controlled automatic release as part of the Dam's standard operating procedure.
"With the amount of rainfall the city has recently received - the dam level is approaching 100 per cent and we're likely to see the radial gates opened in the next 12 to 24 hours for a controlled release," Cr Dametto said.
"This is a normal part of managing the Ross River Dam during the wet season, the flow will remain within the Ross River, and we do not expect any significant downstream impacts. There is no need for alarm," Cr Dametto said.
As occurred last year when the dam reaches 103 per cent, the centre radial gate opens by 0.25m.
Where the dam continues to rise, in accordance with the Ross River Dam EAP, further openings of the radial gates will occur.
Councillor Dametto reminded residents to stay safe around waterways.
"Please keep clear of the Ross River and swollen creeks. Our team is monitoring conditions closely and will keep the community informed if anything changes."
