Rainbow radar and weather workshop

Wimmera and Southern Mallee communities will soon have access to more accurate, real-time weather information thanks to a new Doppler radar being built near Rainbow.

To learn how the radar works and the benefits it will bring, farmers and community members are invited to an open information session being held at Rainbow Bowls Club next Thursday, July 4.

The Victorian Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes will be at the forum which will include presentations from Bureau of Meteorology State Manager Andrew Tupper and Agriculture Victoria Seasonal Risk Agronomist Dale Grey.

Dr Tupper will provide insight into the capabilities of the new radar and how the data it collects is used by Bureau of Meteorology forecasters.

"This project has been the result of great cooperation between the local community, Wimmera Development Association, Agriculture Victoria and the Bureau of Meteorology," Dr Tupper said.

"This is an important project for the region's primary producers who depend so much on accurate rainfall forecasts.

"The data available through the radar will help growers make informed choices about harvesting, tillage and the use of chemicals and fertilisers.

"It will also provide critical information for emergency services."

Dale Grey will follow Dr Tupper's presentation with an update on what the climate models are predicting for the rest of winter and spring.

He will also provide information on how to interpret climate models and weather data and how this information is best used when making decisions on-farm.

All community members are invited to this forum which will include plenty of opportunity to ask questions about the new radar and what we can expect for the remainder of the growing season this year.
