A bold rainforest restoration project will protect and improve 37 hectares of critically endangered littoral rainforest and coastal vegetation at The Spit for future generations.
A core area of native forest will be established within the northern half of Federation Walk at The Spit on the Gold Coast.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles said the project had the potential to create one of the largest areas of littoral rainforest outside of existing established remnants.
"Through implementation of The Spit Master Plan, this restoration project will return and enhance the natural values of the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve," Mr Miles said.
"Locals and tourists alike will be able to enjoy an enhanced nature based recreational experience as they appreciate the amenities of our world class ocean park."
It will take approximately 12 months for plantings to become established, with approximately $8 million required over 10 years to restore 37 hectares of native forest into a healthy and biodiverse system.
Mayor Tom Tate said the project would deliver considerable benefit to the community and visitors.
"This restoration project will transform Federation Walk and the eastern side of the Spit, adding to our City's biodiverse offering," he said.
"It will also create valuable greenspace for future Gold Coasters as our city continues to grow."
Gold Coast Waterways CEO, Hal Morris, said it's great to see this partnership bringing further elements of The Spit Master Plan to life.
"This project will complement the other community spaces we're delivering at The Spit including the Seaway Promenade and a planned jetty and pontoon in Marine Stadium."
The Queensland Government and Gold Coast City Council will share funding, with the State Government contributing $4,326,841 and the City providing $2,729,440 over a 10 year project timeframe.
The Federal Government is providing funding towards construction of a permanent irrigation system.
